Only 30 km from the coast, the relief of Montenegro changes drastically into a harsh and almost impassable karst region of the Lovćen mountain massif. This region is the border between Montenegrin coast and continental part, exposed to the influences of the Mediterranean and continental climate.
About 20 km from Cetinje, there is the National Park Lovćen, where on the second highest peak of Lovćen proudly stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš.
The winding road leads to the village Njeguši. This village is known for its typical Montenegrin national cuisine. We invite you to taste the famous Njeguški cheese and prosciutto with homemade bread, as well as homemade wine or mead.
A narrow asphalt road leads to the foothill of the mausoleum. Then we will climb 461 steps to Jezerski peak to 1,660 m above sea level. Take a deep breath and open your eyes wide. You will be enchanted by the beautiful view of the Bay of Kotor, Skadar Lake, high mountains in the north of Montenegro, as well as a part of Albania. In the mausoleum, you will see two stone caryatids: mother and daughter, as well as a sculpture of Njegoš, and Njegoš's grave in the crypt of the mausoleum.
We will complete the story of the great ruler and poet with a visit to the mausoleum. We will combine the natural beauty, culture and history of Montenegro and get a true image of the people in the hilly Balkans.
Through the "stone sea", the road continues to Cetinje, the Old Capital of Montenegro, place where the spirit and tradition of Montenegrin people are best preserved. You can also visit the house where Njegoš was born. It is located near the road that passes through the village. It is a small stone house, very simple and modest, but everything in it reminds that a great man lived in it. The exhibition presents not only household items, but also literary works, among which there is the first edition of "The Mountain Wreath", printed in Vienna in 1847.
