National Park "Biogradska gora" is located in the northeast part of Montenegro, between the rivers Tara and Lim. Biogradska gora is the most forested national park in Europe, while Bjelasica is the greenest mountain in Montenegro, very rich in water. National Park "Biogradska gora" was established in 1952 as the first National Park in Montenegro. It has a long history of preserving the natural environment because the area of Biogradska gora was declared a National Park only six years after the first NP in the world was declared (Yellowstone, USA, in 1872). The park has 26 plant communities with about 2,000 species and subspecies. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded, including the golden eagle. The fauna consists of deer, does, chamois, wolves, wild boars, foxes, rabbits, and the area of the National Park is a habitat for more than 350 species of insects. The greatest natural value of this park is Biogradska gora, with an area of 1,600 hectares, and it is one of the last three preserved rainforests in the Old Continent. The glacial lakes Biogradsko, Pešića, Ursulovačko, Small Ursulovačko, Šiško Big and Šiško Small lakes occupy a special place in the park. Biogradsko Lake occupies a central place in the park, in the heart of the rainforest, at an altitude of 1,094 meters. The lake is located in the place where a glacier melted in the ancient past, thus creating a water surface of about 250,000 m2. The maximum depth of Biogradsko Lake is 12.1 meters.
