Durmitor is a magnificent mountain massif located in the north of Montenegro and belongs to the Dinarides. It is also the name of the largest Montenegrin protected area “NP Durmitor". Founded in 1952, with a smaller area, the National Park Durmitor has a long history of formal preservation of the natural environment dating back to 1907 when the Black Lake received protected status. The National park includes about fifty peaks higher than 2,000 meters above sea level, including Bobotov Kuk (2,525 m), various forests, mountain meadows, plateaus and glades that cover the landscape. At over 1,500 meters above sea level, there are 18 glacial lakes. In these regions, they are called "mountain eyes" (gorske oči). The largest and most beautiful is Black Lake. The old black pine forest in the Crna poda locality is of particular importance, where 450-year-old specimens can reach height of over 50 meters.
The headquarters of the National Park is the town of Žabljak, the largest winter centre in Montenegro, with infrastructure for winter sports and service activities in the field of tourism and hospitality throughout the year. The centre of Durmitor region, Žabljak, is also the "metropolis" of mountain tourism in Montenegro. Established in "up near the sky" location, in primeval nature, it can host thousands of tourists in its hotels and private accommodation. For those who are looking for clean air, potable spring water, beautiful views and silence of green glades, forest of mountain streams, but also to all those for whom the mountain is a magnet and a challenge.
